This week the name of Sioux Falls’ baseball team changed from the Canaries to the Fighting Pheasants.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard about this.
It’s been on TV, radio, newspaper, websites, Twitter and Facebook. It’s the subject of conversations in workplaces, homes, schools, restaurants, bars, coffees shops, barbershops and probably beauty salons.
Here at Insight, we didn’t come up with the name. The new owners came to us with the name and asked what we could do with it. We’re proud of the logos we created.
And we did notice that pheasants seem to fit South Dakota better than canaries. You know — the birds that are famous for dying in coalmines.
Perhaps you heard from people who like the new name. And there’s been no shortage of people who don’t. Our local newspaper bravely took a stand on this important issue. People with Canaries tattoos spoke out bitterly.
But you heard about it, didn’t you? And that was precisely the point.
Because if the Sioux Falls Canaries’ new owners had kept the same name, nobody in Sioux Falls would have been talking about baseball in February at all.
