Insights:Marketing and the Ice Bucket Challenge.

August 28, 2014

If you haven’t heard of the ALS Association’s Ice Bucket Challenge, then you’re probably frozen in a block of ice. It is everywhere and it seems like everyone is doing it. From your neighbor to today’s biggest celebrities. It’s a great cause and is providing millions of dollars for research and raising awareness for combating a little-known disease. You can learn more by going to the ALS Association website.

Marketers have an extra reason to donate to the ALS Association.

Why should marketers feel they owe an extra debt? Because the Ice Bucket Challenge provides an amazing example of the value of truly involving your audience with your brand (or cause). By creating a unique  “happening” that people want to get involved with, you empower your audience to spread your message. Word of mouth has always been and always will be the most powerful form of advertising so, after you write a donation check to the ALS Association, ask yourself are you involving your audience or simply talking at them?
